Website Redesign

Designing Scalable Components to Unite i-Ready with its Parent Brand
Overview

i-Ready is used by 11 million students, making it one of the most popular digital platforms in education. But many users didn’t realize it was created by Curriculum Associates, its parent brand that makes classrooms better for teachers and students. That brand disconnect caused confusion, especially across a website meant to serve both educators and district decision-makers.

To close that gap, Curriculum Associates partnered with Backpack Interactive to build a scalable design system that could express both brands while unifying the user experience.

The Challenge

When Success Creates Confusion

With Curriculum Associates’ growth came a robust website with many contributors. Years of content updates from various teams caused identity and recognition challenges, fueled by duplicate content and confusing information flows.

Many educators didn’t know that i-Ready was a Curriculum Associates product, or that additional products were available.

To solve this identity crisis, CA needed a digital platform that could:

  • Keep the Curriculum Associates and i-Ready brands distinct, while clearly showing their connection
  • Serve both district admins evaluating purchases and teachers using classroom resources
  • Empower internal content teams to build polished pages without relying on developers
  • Support the existing site and ongoing growth

We created a component library to achieve this. That way, CA’s content teams could build new pages independently while maintaining brand consistency, eliminating developer delays and design risks.

Our Approach

Rethinking Navigation, Building for Scale

User testing revealed that users didn’t understand the relationship between Curriculum Associates and i-Ready. We designed the information architecture and navigation to elevate Curriculum Associates’ brand while clearly connecting it to i-Ready.

This structure made the relationship clear: administrators could find the research and purchasing information they needed, while teachers could quickly access their classroom resources.

We collaborated closely with their content, brand, and development teams to understand exactly how components would be used in practice. To give their teams maximum control, we designed the system to be flexible while maintaining consistency.

Empowering Content Teams with Scalable Designs

To give Curriculum Associates full page creation flexibility, we designed modular components that stack in any combination while maintaining visual consistency.

Each one was built to scale and adapt, with:

  • Multiple background color options for dynamic layouts
  • Variants for content types like testimonials and standard blocks
  • Responsive designs across six breakpoints (360–1536 px)
  • Distinct versions for both the corporate and i-Ready brands
  • Mobile-optimized layouts for every component

To ensure successful adoption across teams, we delivered clear, comprehensive implementation guidance, including:

  • Character counts, line limits, and image specs
  • Behavior rules for interactive and layout elements
  • Developer documentation for fast, consistent builds
  • Master component logic that enables global updates across the site

This library now powers CA’s content operations. Developers build once and reuse everywhere. Editors work confidently within the system. And the site remains cohesive, regardless of who updates it.

The Results

A Platform that Works for Everyone

The new Curriculum Associates site launched with a clear identity and the tools to maintain it. Visitors now easily understand the relationship between CA and i-Ready, with intuitive paths for both administrators and teachers.

The library gives their team flexibility within clear guardrails. As they add content, launch products, or shift messaging, they can move fast knowing every new page will meet brand standards.

Why This Matters

Building Systems that Scale

For education companies managing extensive content, modular design systems create lasting value. Teams become self-sufficient. Developers focus on innovation rather than repetitive builds. And brands maintain standards even as dozens of contributors add content.

Curriculum Associates gained a refreshed site along with the infrastructure to evolve independently and scale confidently.
